LanguaL and FPI


The Food Description Task Group (WP1.8 TG2)  -  LanguaL

This section contains documents and references relevant to the food description initiative for the EuroFIR databank system.  i.e. legal information, reports, meeting reports and presentations concerning food description.

The section specifically contain information about the LanguaL food description thesaurus and the LanguaL Food Product Indexer.
 


 New LanguaL 2008 version and Food Product Indexer, version 3.9
   
The LanguaL 2008 Thesaurus publication

The LanguaL 2008 Thesaurus and version 3.91 of the LanguaL Food Product indexer is now available.

The four reports are

  • LanguaL 2008  -  The LanguaL Thesaurus
  • LanguaL 2008  -  Introduction to the LanguaL Thesaurus
  • LanguaL 2008  -  Multilingual thesaurus (English-Danish-French-German-Italian- Spanish)
  • LanguaL 2008  -  Documentation of changes from version 2007

The new version of the LanguaL thesaurus includes a series of updates proposed by the compilers documenting the national datasets for the EuroFIR project.

The LanguaL Food Product Indexer 3.91 (October 2008) ready to download

Version 3.91 (October 2008) of the LanguaL Food Product Indexer has been updated based on feedback from users after the LanguaL  Food Indexing courses in Wageningen, Paris, and Washington D.C. as well as suggestions from users during the LanguaL indexing of the the European food composition databases carried out in the EuroFIR project.
 

To install the new version of the LanguaL Food Product Indexer, follow the procedure below:

  1. Locate your current version of the LanguaL Food Product Indexer software in Windows Explorer. It is typically in a folder named \LanguaL. Make a copy of the executable (LanguaL.exe) or rename it for safety reasons:
     
    1. In Windows Explorer, right click the LanguaL.exe
    2. Choose Rename and rename the file (e.g. to LanguaL_old.exe)
       
  2. Download the new version of the LanguaL Food Product Indexer version 3.91 (LanguaL.zip, zipped file, 800 kB):
     
    1. Right click here to download the zipped file and save the file (choose "Save Target As..." in Internet Explorer or "Save Link As..." in FireFox)
    2. Find the directory with the old version of LanguaL.exe (the file you just renamed above)
    3. Click Save to save the file in the folder
    4. Extract (unzip) the LanguaL.zip file making the LanguaL.exe available in the same folder (default \LanguaL)

The new version of the LanguaL Food Product Indexer should now be ready to use. Double click the LanguaL.exe or an eventual shortcut on the desktop to launch the software.

You should now see the text LanguaL 2008  -  Food Product Indexer Version 3.91 [October 2008] in the top left hand corner of the software.


The LanguaL 2008 Thesaurus database for updating the LanguaL Food product Indexer's thesaurus

The LanguaL Food Product Indexer can be updated with the LanguaL 2008 Thesaurus as follows
  1. Locate the current version of the LanguaL Food Product Indexer's database. in Windows Explorer. The database file is called LanguaL.mdb and is by default placed in the \LanguaL\Data folder just under the LanguaL folder (the folder where LanguaL.exe is situated, see above)*.
     
  2. Make a copy of the current database by right clicking the file LanguaL.mdb, then click Copy followed by right click and Paste (or [Ctrl]+[v]). A file named Copy of LanguaL.mdb is created in the same folder (default \LanguaL\Data).
     
  3. Download the new LanguaL 2008 Thesaurus (LanguaLTree.zip, zipped file, 9 MB) to the folder where the LanguaL software is located:
     
    1. Right click here to download the zipped file of the Thesaurus and save the file (e.g. choose "Save Target As..." in Internet Explorer or "Save Link As..." in FireFox) in the same folder as the langual.exe file (default \LanguaL).
      NB!  -  NOT in the same folder as the LanguaL.mdb file and copy
    2. Extract (unzip) the LanguaLTree.zip file making the LanguaLTree.mdb file available in the same folder (default \LanguaL)

The new version of the LanguaL 2008 Thesaurus will now be installed when the LanguaL Food Product Indexer is started the next time. It takes a while to update the LanguaL thesaurus in the software, and you will need to answer OK to the updating the thesaurus and for each language installed in the software.

After installation, LanguaL 2008 will appear in the upper left hand corner of the LanguaL Food Product Indexer.

 

* if this is not the case, open the LanguaL Food Product Indexer and click File > Show database location. Note the database location and close the LanguaL Food Product Indexer again. Start from 1. again.


The LanguaL Food product Indexer 3.4 (outdated section)

Version 3.4 of the LanguaL Food Product Indexer was presented at the 2nd Food Indexing course in Paris, 8-9 March 2007. This version was updated based on feedback from users after the 1st Food Indexing course in Wageningen and contains the new LanguaL 2007 thesaurus.
During the course in Paris, some small inexpediencies were found in the software, and the version 3.5 is available for download.

You can either download the full version with reports, presentations and tutorial, or choose the the parts that you want to download:

The files available for download are compressed files (.zip files). Download the files you want to your computer and extract all its content on the desktop or a folder of your choice.
 

   

Some documents are transferred in PDF-format (marked ). For this you need the Adobe PDF Reader, which can be downloaded from Adobe's site, free of charge. Click here to get the newest version. Other file types are MS Word files (marked ), MS Excel files (marked ) and MS PowerPoint files (marked ). Online data information is marked .

NOTE
This website is under constant development and the current layout presented as an example of how the EuroFIR Technical Website could appear. It is given as part of the EuroFIR Prototype given in the EuroFIR Technical specifications report. The website and its pages are optimized for a screen resolution of 1024*768 or higher....(more to come).
