The training of students and people involved in the field of food composition data is essential to promote the acquisition process of food composition data, and to enhance knowledge of the usage and application of food composition data.

With their diverse features, the EuroFIR e-learning modules were designed to help users obtain a comprehensive understanding of the different aspects of food composition data. The e-learning modules are aimed at students and all those involved in food composition work.

EuroFIR has created a first e-learning module on ‘Nutrient Analysis for Non-chemists’ – a topic that is considered a high priority within EuroFIR. The new module uses animations and visuals to assist students in understanding nutrient analysis. Four major areas on nutrient analysis are covered in the module, including fats and fatty acids, proteins and amino acids, carbohydrates and fibre, and minerals. The module includes interactive exercises that should motivate the students individually, and help them to digest the information presented.

After studying this e-learning module, users will be able to understand the chemical and technical principles, and the strengths and limitations, of macronutrient analyses. They will also be capable of interpreting laboratory results and evaluating their quality, as well as being able to critically communicate with laboratory technicians regarding analytical methods and results.

The e-learning modules are not designed to replace general courses on the application of food composition data but rather are designed to be an integral part of these courses.

The EuroFIR e-learning modules were created together with the University of Wageningen and the software company Topshare, both based in The Netherlands. EuroFIR acknowledges the University of Wageningen for it's great effort and excellent teamwork in this activity as a partner of the EuroFIR project.
