For dietitians

Why do you need food composition data?

Access to accurate food composition data is essential for dietitians to carry out nutritional assessments and interventions with their patients. The management of some medical conditions (e.g. phenylketonuria and renal disease) requires accurate calculation of the amount of specific nutrients in foods and in the persons overall diet. Also, dietitians need to be able to easily identify foods that contain low, medium or high amounts of various nutrients to appropriately advise their patients.

Many dietitians rely on their basic knowledge of the nutrient composition of foods to estimate calorie and nutrient intakes. Though the food supply is changing rapidly – there is a greater range of foods available and the composition of similar food types can vary greatly. To provide the best care for your patients it is important that you have ready access to up to date food composition data. Also, as the population becomes more ethnically diverse it is important to have access to information on traditional ethnic foods.

The eSearch facility provided by EuroFIR AISBL provides you with easy access to the latest food composition information for thousands of foods and mixed dishes from across Europe, including traditional ethnic foods. You can search your own country specific database or simultaneously search more than 20 national and specialised food composition databases. Values for a variety of food components can be viewed, including energy, vitamins, minerals and bioactive substances.
