For industry
Why do you need food composition data?
Food composition data are vital for those working in the food industry. European regulations on nutrition and health claims and, most recently the new Food Information regulation mean that those selling foods have to know what they contain. Food composition data is also important for meeting quality standards, for marketing, reformulation or new product development. Some food businesses may have their foods analysed directly in a laboratory to provide nutrition information. However, this can be extremely expensive and in many cases, composition of foods and drinks will be calculated based on existing food composition data.
When sourcing food composition data, many in the food industry will turn to national food composition tables, either as a book or in electronic or online formats. However, the information required may not always be available, the data may be old or have values missing for the nutrients of interest.
In this case, the FoodEXplorer offered by EuroFIR is invaluable to enable you to search for information in a number of European and international food composition databases simultaneously. This can allow you to find products that may not be available in your own national database, to compare values to see if there are differences between your country and other countries, to estimate missing nutrient values or to find more up to date data. You can also search specialist databases for information about plant bioactives, such as polyphenols or carotenoids, in foods.
