Consumption of teas, digestive drinks, juices, elixirs and extracts prepared from botanicals for health maintenance has become part of European cultural heritage; plant food supplements are a modern-day extension of this process.<\/p>\r\n<p>PlantLIBRA (PLANT food supplements: Levels of Intake, Benefit and Risk Assessment) aimed to foster safe use of food supplements, containing plants or botanical preparations, through\u00a0increased science-based decision-making by regulators and food chain operators. To make informed decisions, competent authorities and food businesses need more quality-assured and accessible information and better tools.<\/p>\r\n<p>ePlantLIBRA was\u00a0designed to develop, validate and disseminate data and methodologies for risk- and benefit assessment, and implement sustainable international cooperation, which is essential to ensure the quality of the plants imported to\u00a0the EU.<\/p>\r\n<p>Supporting science-based decision-making and safe use of plant food supplements were\u00a0the driving aims of PlantLIBRA shared by all partners.\u2028 And, as with all EU-funded projects, these aims are aligned closely with\u00a0policy, major regulatory bodies and stakeholders.\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">In four years, PlantLIBRA\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">delivered<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>A meta-database containing new and existing data on consumption, benefits, adverse effects, biological activity of constituents and contaminants, investigating methods to identify and control the PFS<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Accessible risk\u2010benefit models for PFS\u00a0based on scientific investigation, which are able to provide data on assumptions as well as risks and benefits<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Dissemination of results to stakeholders to assist science-based decision making, enhance international cooperation and harmonisation, as well as consumers awareness.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurofir.org\/plantlibra\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/09\/EU-Flag.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"  wp-image-351 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.eurofir.org\/plantlibra\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/09\/EU-Flag-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"EU Flag\" width=\"99\" height=\"65\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.eurofir.org\/plantlibra\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/09\/EU-Flag-300x197.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.eurofir.org\/plantlibra\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/09\/EU-Flag-1024x675.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 99px) 100vw, 99px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>PlantLIBRA\u00a0received funding from the European Union\u2019s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no. 245199<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PLANT food supplements: Levels of Intake, Benefit and Risk Assessment \u2013 PlantLIBRA Coordinators: Prof. Patrizia Restani &#8211;\u00a0University of Milan (IT) and Dr Luca Bucchini &#8211; Hylobates Consulting, Rome (IT) The use of plants and plant derivatives to maintain health has been the popular choice throughout Europe for many centuries.
