Project Updates | October 2024
ALLIANCE
Following on from successful M18 review meeting in July, partners have received good comments from the European Commission and EuroFIR D4.1 on ALLIANCE uses cases was accepted as a high quality report. Currently, EuroFIR is elaborating this work further for D4.2 (Final Use Cases: Validation Campaigns and Demonstration Activities), due at the end of the project in October 2025 but vital for development of exploitation pathways. We have identified current gaps in the use case descriptions and logistics, e.g., data protection, analytical procedures, scalability, training, stakeholder engagement, risk management and documentation. The next consortium meeting will take place 2nd-3rd October 2024 in Gijón (ES), where the gaps and needs will be discussed further.
FishEUTrust
In past months, partners have been particularly active preparing for events where project will be presented. FishEUTrust was identified as an important project in the field of artificial intelligence (AI)-based knowledge in fisheries and was invited -by DG MARE- to participate in the poster exhibition at the Fisheries Science Seminar 2024 on AI (Brussels – BE, September 2024). The project will also be showcased at the Synergy Days Conference in Barcelona (ES) and WEFTA 2024 in Izmir (TR), both in October 2024. The next consortium meeting will be 4-6th November 2024 in Olhão (PT), with the project meeting, a cross-pollination workshop, and technological demonstration sessions. EuroFIR is continuing work with JSI (SI) on adapting SeaFoodTOMORROW benchmark tool for FishEUTrust.
EUOpenFood
After addressing EFSA’s comments on D1.4 covering amendments to the SSD2 business rules and, importantly, whether there might be a better approach for mapping food composition datasets, the deliverable has been resubmitted. The focus now is on finalising the final report for Phase 1 (D1.6), which will provide guidelines for collection, storage, and maintenance of the EU FCDB, due at the end September. Project partners will meet in October to discuss this deliverable and selection of FCDB compilers for the Phase 2 pilots as well as scheduling of planned updates and progress with FoodEX2 coding. The next meetings with EFSA, post-D1.6 submission, are in October and November.
WATSON
While the consortium is starting the 18M Periodic Reporting, and is preparing for the RP1 meeting in November, EuroFIR has continued to engage with the use case scenarios and planning pilots. Currently, the main focus is on completing the implementation plans for the pilots based on the use cases, which due in September. As part of T5.1, EuroFIR is supporting DBC Europe with the use cases to determine data privacy and legal requirements. WATSON is now clustering with ALLIANCE, as related Horizon Europe-Farm2Fork projects, to explore synergies and opportunities for collaboration and cross-fertilisation to improve traceability and prevent food fraud. The two projects are planning a joint presentation at the Synergy Days Conference 2024 in Barcelona (ES) in October.
Zero Hidden Hunger EU
Since the first ZHH EU data management plan (DMP) was submitted in June 2024 (D9.1), EuroFIR has continued search for additional information, elaborating individual digital objects (data, code, databases, etc.) entering the project. Next year, the focus will shift to digital objects generated by the project. Related to this, EuroFIR attended a WP3 technical meeting in Brussels (3rd-4th September 2024), which explored activities related to dietary intakes, to understand more about data acquisition, sharing and analysis. Partners no understand what is required for the DMP and are gathering documentation to be provided by the end of the year. As WP8 and WP8 leader, EuroFIR has also completed M6 internal technical reports, as well as a report for Task 1.6 Gender Equity Plan. Dissemination and communication activities led by EUFIC and policy considerations led by EPHA are also increasing gradually.

VeriFish
Collaborative success at the VeriFish WP2-3-4 Workshop – 17-18th September 2024, Tromsø, Norway
NOFIMA in Tromsø hosted the VeriFish WP2-3-4 workshop, a collaborative event where partners came together to tackle difficult questions and seek practical solutions. This two-day workshop was far more than just a meeting; it was a dynamic environment where individuals worked closely, sharing knowledge, brainstorming (disagreed agreeably), and developing actionable plans for the future of the project. The first day focused on selecting indicators framework, with attention given to fisheries, aquaculture, nutrition. Energy was high right from the start, with engaging sessions led by the experts including Christine Absil (Culpea – NL), Tim Huntington (Poseidon – UK), and Siân Astley (EuroFIR – BE), guiding participants through the complexities of choosing indicators. There were no presentations, but rather lively discussions where everyone was encouraged to contribute, ask tough questions, and offer potential solutions. This collaborative spirit made the day both productive and enjoyable. Day 2 was all about integration and outputs. The morning focused use cases and potential data sources, considering how the indicators might be applied to real-world examples, as well as how the processes should be reported at the end of October. The workshop finished with aligning the indicator framework and use cases with the VeriFish Knowledge Base and media outputs (e.g., factsheet), and the Web-App architecture. These sessions were hands-on, giving everyone the chance to contribute to shaping the project’s tools and outputs, and use a white board! This workshop wasn’t just about ticking off agenda items; it was about solving real problems together and learning from each other, and finished with a home-cooked meal (thank you, Michaela & Petter), making the workshop a true success both in terms of outcomes and teamwork.
WASTELESS
WASTELESS Project Review 5th September 2024, Brussels (BE)
In early September, WASTELESS gathered in person and virtually for a highly productive Review Period 1 meeting. The meeting kicked off with a warm welcome by the REA Project Officer, followed by an introduction to the meeting’s objectives and agenda. Ana Barros, the project coordinator from UTAD (PT), presented an overview of the first 18-months of the project, highlighting scientific progress and implementation, which paved the way for further discussions. A series of detailed presentations from WP leaders followed including: Zhuang Qian (SDU – DK) provided insight into the community of practice and framework for measurement and monitoring of FLW whilst Dario Dongo (WIISE – IT) shared progress with development of digital tools and methodologies, especially strategies for overcoming obstacles. Irene González Pérez (CNTA – ES), who has only recently taken over responsibility for WP3, presented testing of the tools and methodologies in case studies across various sectors (industry, retail, HoReCa [hotels, restaurants, catering], households). Siân Astley (EuroFIR – BE) described activities related to FLW data collection, management, and integration, specifically within WP3 but also in comparison with existing data, and Miguel Rodrigues (UTAD – PT) offered an in-depth examination of strategies for FLW reduction, showcasing both the achievements and hurdles that have been overcome. Before lunch, Pedro Couto (UTAD – PT) and Sofia Reis (IFA – AT) reported on efforts to deliver a systemic toolbox for replication of WASTELESS solution and engage stakeholders including food system actors. Each presentation was followed by a Q&A session with the reviewers and the meeting concluded with a brief discussion led by the Project Officer, who also offered preliminary conclusions and confirmed the next steps. Review meetings serve as an essential checkpoint for projects, and helped the team remember how far work to reduce food waste through innovative solutions has come rather than focusing on navigating the inevitable complexities assocation with implementation and delivery. Stay tuned for more updates as the project progresses toward its next milestone!
