The need of Branded Food Composition Databases: Opportunities and challenges

Modern diets are increasingly rich in processed products. Almost two thirds of the food supply consist of packaged foods but, until now, most national food composition datasets have focused on generic foods that cannot reflect the unique characteristics of branded products. For instance, in the market, the term “Granola” can refer to a wide range of products with vastly different nutritional characteristics, as recipes and ingredients vary significantly across brands. Making plant-based an everyday choice

As suggested by the name, a plant-based diet focuses on foods primarily from plants, which includes not only fruits and vegetables but also nuts, seeds, oils, grains and legumes. Whether a plant-based diet is healthier than one including meat is still under discussion. However, reducing consumption of red meat and eating a diet rich in plant-based foods are associated with health benefits; plant-based diets also have the potential to help combat global warming by reducing the consumption of precious resources including water. In 1991, World Diabetes Day was created by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and WHO.
