Reducing Food Waste: Strategies for a Sustainable Future

Food waste is a critical issue that impacts not only the environment but also the global economy and food security. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports that nearly one-third of all food produced worldwide is lost (in the field) or wasted subsequently at every stage from production and processing to retail and consumption. This has significant environmental consequences, including the unnecessary use of water and land resources.
Reducing food waste requires a multi-faceted strategy. On the supply chain side, improvements in transportation and storage can minimise loss and spoilage. Advances in packaging technology that extend shelf life and better protect perishable items are also crucial. However, integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics promise more accurate demand forecasting and improved inventory management, both of which can significantly reduce loss and waste.
Addressing food waste also involves changing behaviour amongst policymakers and consumers. Effective policies can facilitate redistribution of surplus food from restaurants and retailers and not just to animal feed streams. Meanwhile, helping consumers understand the impact of their choices—such as purchasing food that might go to waste and using proper storage and handling techniques—can lead to meaningful change and support food safety practices. One example of efforts to combat food waste is WASTELESS (Grant Agreement n° 101084222), part of the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research & Innovation Programme. This collaborative project, including EuroFIR and 15 other partners, integrates novel technologies and fosters cooperation among stakeholders across Europe. WASTELESS focuses on data-driven decision-making, education, and supply chain optimisation through enhanced logistics and storage practices, all aimed at reducing significantly food loss and waste.
Minimising food losses and waste demands a holistic approach that combines technological innovation with education and policy advocacy. By promoting best practices and fostering collaboration across Europe, we can make significant strides toward a more sustainable future.
