The EuroFIR Component Thesaurus version 1.2 (access details on the Thesaurus page) includes the hierarchical grouping of components, supported through the Thesaurus Manager software that is used to view and edit the EuroFIR thesauri. At present, all groups have codes of the form GRP_xxx so that they are distinct from component identifiers, including those that report totals for the group (e.g. GRP_FA is distinct from FACID).

The grouping includes polyhierarchy, in which a component can be linked to more than one group. For example, individual active carotenoids are linked to both the Vitamin A components group (GRP_VITA) and the Carotenoids, vitamin A active group (GRP_CARTVA), in the Lipid components main group. This allows components to be located according to different properties. Comments on this aspect of the thesaurus hierarchy would also be helpful.
