Welcome to the EuroFIR
Technical Website
This part of the EuroFIR websites contains the technical
implementations of the EuroFIR food composition search
functions, the links to worldwide food composition
information as well as background information for food
composition data management and interchange produced
both earlier - especially in European projects like
Eurofoods - and during the EuroFIR project.
The website is maintained by the EuroFIR WP1.8 Compiler
network and supporting task groups. |

The Compiler
Network
The Compiler Network is the central group in the
EuroFIR's WP1.8 Compiler Network and supporting task
groups - here you
can find contact and other information for the
Compiler network.
The first Compiler Network Meeting took place at
AFSSA, Paris, 5-6 March 2007 - followed by the
EuroFIR Value Documentation and Food Indexing
courses. Find presentations and documents from the

The EuroFIR Compiler Network Quality training course
took place in Geel, Belgium, 8-9 November 2007.

The second Compiler network meeting with value
documentation and quality assessment training took
place in Norwich, UK, 18-21 March 2008.

The CEN
Standard Task Group
The current versions of the
EuroFIR Standard Description (2007-07-13) and
Technical Annex (2007-11-06) can be downloaded
here. A new page with the EuroFIR thesauri for use
in value documentation can be found
here or in the
menu to the left.
A preliminary report on the
Aspects of using ChEBI for EuroFIR components is
also available.

The
Food Description Task Group
In addition to the public LanguaL site,
http://www.langual.org/, the EuroFIR Technical
website includes specific LanguaL implementations
produced by the EuroFIR Consortium and are therefore
not publicly accessible.
A special page for Food Description especially with
respect to scientific names can be found
here.
Information on the new versions of LanguaL (LanguaL
2007) and the LanguaL Food Product Indexer can be
found here.

The
Systems Development Task Group
The Systems Development Task Group undertakes the
technical implementation of the EuroFIR Databank
System and its services.
The current version of the
EuroFIR Databank Specifications and
XML Food Data Transport Package (version 1.3,
2008-07-30) can be downloaded here. The
development of these documents are currently pending
consensus on the EuroFIR Standard and its Technical
Annex, see above.

The
Data
Interface Task Group
The Data Interface Task Group undertakes the
technical specification of the EuroFIR Databank
System's data interfaces and its services.

The Databases
and Search Functions
The implementation of the EuroFIR food composition
data search functions are being developed over time.
Quite a few facilities require intensive work to be
carried out by the data compilers. The EuroFIR
search functions currently include search in free
text, search with with LanguaL descriptors. The
search facility is called the
eSearch prototype.The EuroFIR database on
bioactive components in foods is
eBasis.

Background papers
Over time, quite a few papers concerning the
technical issues of food composition data management
and interchange as well as papers on metadata such
as nitrogen-to-protein conversion factors, fatty
acid conversion factors and energy calculation
factors has been produced. Under the heading

papers as well as the reports and specifications
produced by the WP1.8 Compiler Network and

NOTE
This website is under constant development and the
current layout presented as an example of how the
EuroFIR Technical Website could appear. It is given as
part of the EuroFIR Prototype given in the EuroFIR
Technical specifications report. The website and its
pages are optimized for a screen resolution of 1024*768
or higher....(more to come).
