REFRESH FOOD WASTE 2017: multi-stakeholder conference connecting champions of food waste reduction and valorisation

18th-19th May 2017

Organised by REFRESH partners

Berlin, Germany

REFRESH Food Waste 2017, the multi-stakeholder conference connecting champions of food waste reduction and valorisation, will take place 18-19 May 2017. The conference is organised by the REFRESH project, an EU research project contributing towards Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 of halving per capita food waste at the retail and consumer level and reducing food losses along production and supply chains, reducing waste management costs, and maximizing the value from un-avoidable food waste and packaging materials.

More information on the Conference including a link to register and to apply to participate in the Incubation Day and Innovators’ Fair will follow in the next months on eu-refresh.org, in REFREH Newsletter and on REFRESH Twitter and Facebook – stay tuned!

State of the World’s Plants Symposium

25th-26th May 2017

Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

The State of the World’s Plants Symposium coincides with the publication of a cutting-edge annual report highlighting our current knowledge of the Earth’s plant diversity, the global threats that plants face and the policies dealing with them.

The symposium is based around six themed sessions, each comprising talks from invited experts and a panel Q&A. Speakers will address a series of globally important questions relating to their own plant science research and policy work:

  • Madagascar: megadiverse and misunderstood – how can we hope to reverse threats to biodiversity?
  • The immediate risk of extinction: climate change won’t matter if everything has already died out…
  • Wildfires: a necessary evil?
  • Invasive plants: born to invade?
  • From field to healed: how do we detect the medicinal plants of the future?
  • Valuing nature: which plant species are most valuable?

Call for abstracts

We are inviting abstracts from delegates wishing to present a poster and a one-minute oral presentation. Prizes will be awarded for the best early career researcher posters.

14th International Postgraduate Course

on the Production and Use of Food Composition Data in Nutrition

1st-6th October 2017

Register here!

Division of Human Nutrition of Wageningen University & Graduate School VLAG (Advanced Studies in Food Technology, Agrobiotechnology,

The aim of FoodComp 2017 is to demonstrate how to produce, manage and use good quality food composition data in a standardized way, using harmonized procedures, so that the requirements of the multiple users of food composition data can be met. The course will be based on the philosophy that the preparation of nutritional databases requires close understanding of the needs of the users by both compilers and producers of data. The course will show how this understanding can be achieved and the benefits that flow from the collaboration of users, analysts and compilers.

Who should attend?
FoodComp 2017 is intended for those involved in nutritional database programmes as analysts, as compilers of food composition databases, and/or users who wish to have a better understanding of how databases are prepared and the constraints upon their use. The course will also be of value to those teaching nutrition and nutritional aspects of food chemistry and to those interested in assessing exposure from diets. Applicants should hold a master degree in nutrition, epidemiology, food science, agricultural science or related field.
