Animal Protein’s Place in Modern Nutrition and Sustainability: Insights from the European Food Forum

On 24 September EuroFIR attended European Food Forum event at the European Parliament – “Animal Protein: A Key Element for Nutritional Balance and Health in Europe”. It was an important occasion to offer a balanced perspective that acknowledges the complementary roles of both animal and plant proteins in sustainable diets. Speakers offered various evidence and solutions how animal proteins fit into a modern, inclusive vision of sustainability and nutrition. First panel on sustainability highlighted progress made by the livestock sector in improving environmental performance and animal welfare. Second panel on nutrition focused on the nutritional value of animal proteins, including essential nutrients, dietary needs for different age groups, and risks associated with protein deficiency. Beside traditional farming and plant-based alternatives a third middle option was presented where cultured meat can offer alternative that is both enriching dietary diversity and helping foster healthier, more sustainable outcomes. Overall discussions aimed to move beyond polarised narratives and emphasise complementary roles of various protein sources by aligning with environmental and climate goals.
