Establishment of a New Working Group by INSA to Update the Portuguese Food Composition Table

The National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA) has established a new working group through the PortFIR network, aimed at updating the Portuguese Food Composition Table (TCA). This initiative focuses on priority areas in nutrition and the anticipated needs of stakeholders and consumers, with the ultimate goal of achieving public health gains related to food. The group’s objectives include identifying food and nutritional information needs, setting priorities, and developing mechanisms and procedures for requesting and collecting laboratory results from stakeholders. Additionally, identifying foods that have undergone reformulation in terms of fat, salt, and sugar content.

The working group intends to involve participants from various sectors of the food industry, including production and transformation, distribution and sale, research and academia, regulation, and nutrition and dietetics, among others. These participants, representing diverse activities and consumer expectations regarding the TCA, currently include 46 individuals from 31 organizations. All the work developed by this group will be presented at the annual PortFIR meeting, ensuring a collaborative approach to improving the national food composition data.
