Project Updates | May 2024
ALLIANCE
During March we have successfully completed the first round of guided interviews with tool providers, as part of the work on uses case scenarios and innovation management, which also includes consideration of market needs and potential exploitation pathways. The results were presented by Siân Astley and Christina-Ariadni Valagkouti at the consortium meeting (9-10th April, Athens – EL). This also helped us get a better understanding of the use cases and how the tools can reduce the potential for fraud as well as likely benefits in terms of brand reputation, quality and safety, regulatory compliance, transparency, consumer confidence, and cost. These insights enabled us to propose solutions, which together with results from the guided interviews, informed D4.1 – Uses case Scenarios, Planning and Preparation, which was submitted to the European Commission at the end of April. The project will undergo its M18 review in early July.
FishEUTrust
During the past few months work has intensified on several fronts. While BELIT (RS) has coordinated work on business process modelling, we have been meeting T3.1 contributors to understand how the digital methods can potentially support the business models and sharing our ideas on how to improve understanding for non-specialists. As part of preparation for D7.2, a report on integrating existing solutions, coordinated by DIGITALSMART, EuroFIR has provided information about the SEAFOODTOMORROW benchmark tool, which is to be digitalized by JSI (SI). We also met WRG Europe (UK), communication and dissemination coordinator, to facilitate development of future newsletter and updating capture of publications.
WATSON
While continuing to follow activities across various WPs, we have had more frequent discussions to support development of use case scenarios and planning pilots. In early April, the task leaders met in London to elaborate the WATSON framework and finalize the pilot/technology matrix and design of the use case scenarios. An early warning system (EWS) has been developed, as one of the core parts of the WATSON framework, which will address authorities’ needs but potentially also other actors’ needs including consumers. In the next few months, the consortium will be busy preparing for the M18 deliverables (10) as well as the Periodic Report and review meeting.
EUOpenFood
In March, the consortium submitted three (draft) deliverables, which described the initial quality assessment of (16) European FCDBs, a strategy for filling missing values, amendments to SSD2 business rules and, importantly, whether there might be a better approach for mapping food composition datasets, and factors related to food composition data at the EU level. Representatives also met with EFSA in Parma (13-14th May) and online to discuss amendments to the (draft) deliverables and the final Phase 1 deliverable as well as draft guidance for collection, storage, and maintenance of the EU FCDB, which should be completed in September 2024. The meeting was concluded with initial planning for the Phase 2 pilot testing.
Zero Hidden Hunger EU
Zero Hidden Hunger’s activities will focus on the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in European populations including vulnerable or hard-to-reach groups. Strategies will be developed to address these persistent nutritional inequalities. Moreover, the effectiveness of these strategies will be compared economically with continued inaction. The project will also consider new approaches to assess MN deficiencies, as well as the bioavailability and metabolism of certain micronutrients, including the role of the human intestinal microbiome.
ZeroHH started with the kick-off meeting in Brussels (BE) on 1-2 February 2024 where Siân Astley presented EuroFIR activities including provision of food composition data, specifically micronutrient content, to help identify and address nutritional deficiencies and data management and quality assurance. EuroFIR is leading dissemination, communication and education (WP8) and impact and exploitation (WP9). Currently, EuroFIR is responsible for drafting the first comprehensive data management plan (DMP), and Hana Musinovic is busy collecting information on digital objects coming into the project as well as those being developed. Progress so far and future planning was presented to the whole consortium at a DMP workshop on 7th May 2024. First DMP version is due in June 2024 and will be continually updated throughout the project.
WASTELESS
Hosted by EuroFIR and Europat, the consortium met for its second face-to-face consortium meeting (25.04.2024) at Comet Louise (Brussels, BE). This meeting was an opportunity to review progress and achievements as well as to get a better understanding of upcoming activities as M18 reporting begins in June.
On the second day, after meeting at the European Potato Trade Association, several partners took the chance to visit the European Parliament.
We’d like to draw your attention to the Monthly Café Talks on Food Loss and Waste (FLW) – events that were launched on the 19th April, full of insightful exchanges, best practices, and expert perspectives on measuring, monitoring, and valorising FLW.
